Digital Canvas Glossary

The vocabulary of direct-view LED — defined plainly, the way our engineers explain it on a first call.

Direct-view LED has accumulated a lot of jargon — pitch, nits, SMD, COB, DCI-P3. Here is what the terms actually mean, in plain language, so you can make a confident decision about a Digital Canvas without a spec sheet in hand.

Glossary

The category

Digital Canvas

A bespoke, fine-pitch direct-view LED wall engineered into a room’s architecture to display fine art and cinema, then disappear when off. Eleusis’s name for what an LED video wall becomes when it is purpose-built as architecture rather than a commodity screen.

Glossary

The technology

Direct-view LED (DVLED)

A display made of millions of tiny LEDs viewed directly — no backlight, no projector, and no seams between panels. Sometimes written “DV LED.” It is what allows a Digital Canvas to span an entire wall as one continuous, bezel-free image.

microLED

A related, even finer-pitch direct-view LED technology. Eleusis offers microLED-class builds for select bespoke projects; for most luxury interiors, advanced flip-chip LED delivers the color and depth the room calls for.

Pixel pitch

The distance, in millimeters, between the centers of adjacent LEDs. A smaller pitch packs pixels more tightly for closer viewing. The right pitch is chosen for how far you sit — not for a marketing number.

Viewing distance

How far the primary seating sits from the wall — the single most important input when selecting a canvas. A useful rule of thumb: pixel pitch in millimeters times roughly ten gives the distance in feet at which pixels become invisible.

SMD

Surface-mounted device — a mature LED packaging method where red, green, and blue LEDs are color-matched at the factory, so the wall looks accurate and uniform out of the box with minimal correction.

COB

Chip-on-board — LEDs encapsulated under a protective resin layer, enabling very fine pitches and a durable surface. It can require more careful calibration to achieve uniform color, which is why we recommend it selectively.

Flip-chip

An advanced LED mounting method that improves thermal performance, brightness efficiency, and reliability — used in our highest-tier indoor canvases for exceptional image fidelity.

CLIO

Eleusis’s on-wall control software. CLIO turns a direct-view LED wall into a Digital Canvas — managing art collections, ambient scenes, content, presets, and control-system integration so the wall is valuable around the clock.

Image & performance

Resolution vs. pixel pitch

Resolution counts total pixels; pixel pitch sets how dense they are. For a wall, pitch matched to viewing distance matters more than a “4K” or “8K” label — the wall is sized to your space, so the pixel count follows the dimensions and pitch you choose.

Nits (brightness)

A measure of how much light a display emits. Higher brightness keeps an image vivid in daylight; indoor canvases are tuned for comfortable cinema and art viewing, while outdoor canvases are built far brighter to stay readable in direct sun.

DCI-P3 color

A wide color space used in digital cinema. Coverage of DCI-P3 indicates how faithfully a canvas can reproduce rich, saturated color — important when the wall is showing fine art or graded film.

True black

Because each LED produces its own light and can switch fully off, direct-view LED renders blacks as genuine absence of light rather than a backlit grey — giving art and film real depth and contrast.

Seamless / bezel-free

Panels engineered and calibrated to join with no visible borders, so the finished canvas reads as a single, continuous surface rather than a grid of screens.

IP65 (outdoor rating)

An ingress-protection rating indicating a canvas is sealed against dust and water jets — the standard for our outdoor Digital Canvas installations on patios, pool decks, and exteriors.

Delivery & service

Calibration

The tuning of brightness, uniformity, and color across every panel so the assembled wall presents as one accurate, even image. Each Eleusis canvas is calibrated as part of the white-glove installation.

White-glove installation

End-to-end delivery by the Eleusis team — engineering drawings, structural mounting, cabling, calibration, and on-site training — rather than a drop-shipped box and a third-party crew.

Spares package

A set of spare LED modules and key components included with each system so a future service event is fast and discreet, with no waiting on overseas parts.
